a day in the life

Breakfast is at 8am and school begins at 9am. Most patients are free to walk around the unit and grounds as they wish, but under certain circumstances we might think that the child needs supervision of some sort. The supervision could be for 3 hours after meals if we suspect someone has been vomiting, or overnight supervision for children who we feel might abscond, exercise or drink water. Some children would exercise endlessly if we allowed them to roam freely and for several days at a time we might need to supervise them 24 hours a day. We try to do this as infrequently as possible, as we understand that it interferes with their activities and friendships. Nevertheless, compulsive exercising is often part of anorexia or bulimia and needs to be dealt with.

The first school session is from 9-10.30am,
there is then a half hour break for snacks. School continues from 11-12 and there is then an hour’s exercise for those fit enough to participate.

Lunch is at 1pm and school continues from 2-3.30pm. Afternoon snack time is from 3.30pm - 4pm. Between 4pm and 6pm there are activities of some sort every day. Supper is at 6pm and there are usually more activities in the evening.

After supper children are free to watch television, play video games, write letters etc.

Bedtime is dependent on age, but all the children are in bed by 10.30pm
